1779 Tax Assessment for Hanover, Ulster, New York

A tax assessment was carried out in Hanover, Ulster, New York in 1779. This area is largely within the current Town of Montgomery, Orange, NY. The assessed tax was 3 shillings and 7 pence on each pound of real and personal property. This comes to an 18% property tax! This was during the war when the citizens were cash poor. The assessments were likely paid with crops and livestock.
